The Exhibition will present the 33 prize winners of the island-wide Art Competition Art Attack, the first competition addressing all residents of the island of all ages and abilities.

During the exhibition , on Friday, 18 April at 8.00p.m, there will also be a traditional music concert from the Eastern Mediterranean region, with songs from Cyprus, Israel, Persia and Turkey, played by the music group “Livas”. The group members are musicians Andreas Christodoulou playing outi, Alkis Agathokleous at nei, Savas Sava at sazi and Evripides Dikaios in percussion. The concert wishes to illuminate the intercultural character of the near east music.

History of the Art-Attack Competition

The Art Attack competition was launched in May 2007, and invited Cypriots of all ages and abilities to express their ideas by submitting an artwork reflecting one of the following themes: Environment - Identity – Difference and Equality - Memories - Spirituality - Future – Line. The competition attracted over 900 entries from all parts of Cyprus, proving that art can be a powerful medium for exploring the island’s social and cultural space.

Cypriot Puzzle is comprised of 33 prize winning artworks of the Art Attack competition. The exhibition title was inspired by one of the winning artworks, entitled “Human Puzzle”, created by 7 year old Kyriakos Zakos. Kyriakos’ artwork shows how all people are different but equal. When

they all come together, the different pieces create the whole picture and so each piece is important. The winning artworks of the exhibition show how each piece has a message and how all pieces together eventually become part of the wider Cypriot identity.

The Cypriot Puzzle Exhibition will travel around the island to the following cities during 2008: Nicosia, Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Famagusta and Kyrenia. The aim of the exhibition is to prompt discussion and reflect on the issues which Cypriots care about and which are visualised here through the art medium. The objective of the project and the message of the exhibition is that Cypriot society possesses a rich cultural diversity which can be explored through the visual arts, and ultimately this diversity needs to be shared and celebrated.
